  • In September 2019, 28 tons were handpicked and delivered to the winery. The fruit was crushed and inoculated the same day with BDXyeast. Pump overs were done twice a day throughout the ferment. Alcoholic fermentation finished in October of 2018 and the tank was pressed off skins and then malolactic fermentation began. It was finished in November 2018. In April 2019, the wine was transferred to new hybrid oak and new French oak barrels. The wine was left in the barrel until mid-June 2020. After filtration, the wine was bottled on June 18, 2020. Cabernet Franc is a significant Bordeaux variety that figures prominently in the “right bank” styles of Pomerol and St Emilionalthough it is rarely released there on its own. Paso Robles’ climate has the ability to get it ripe on its own and we are confident, and excited, to release this 100% varietal Download Tasting Notes
  • When a red wine drinker describes a wine that they would like to consume often, they often describe Merlot. Soft and generous in flavor, Merlot is a significant Bordeaux variety grown in Paso Robles for many years. Merlot likes the sun and the heat. The 2020 Broken Earth Reserve Merlot displays all the characteristics that make Merlot so charming. Expressive dark fruits with silky tannins fill the mouth. Bright acidity goes down clean on the finish. This Merlot was machine-harvested on September 10th in the middle of the night. Early the same day it arrived at the winery and was de-stemmed, crushed, and inoculated with BDX yeast. Twopump-overs a day were done until fermentation was completed. After pressing malolactic fermentation was started. The wine then was barreled into new French and Hybrid barrels and aged for 24 months. The wine was filtered and bottled on February 16, 2023. We produced 215 cases. Merlot is one of the 5 Bordeaux varietals that are famous in France and beyond. Broken Earth’s Reserve Merlot is layered with rich anise, cherry, and spice flavors. It pairs well with grilled chicken and pork loin. Ready to drink at the initial bottling this Merlot still has the structure to age with grace.
  • Petite Sirah usually ripens early and is the first red to the party. In 2020 we picked this grape on October 1st, 2020. Forty tons were machine harvested in the dead of night to keep the grapes cold for transportation to the winery. Upon arrival the grapes were destemmed and gently crushed to open the berries for fermentation. Clos yeast was added immediately after the grapes were safely in the tank. Two pump-overs a day were completed until fermentation was done. This 2020 Reserve Broken Earth Petite Sirah was originally planted in 1996 to a parcel that was 40 acres in size. The small yield gives this wine a complex and intense structure. Originally called Duriff in the Rhone growing region in France, Petite Sirah made its way to California as a blending grape. Over time it became obvious that with California’s climate Petite Sirah could fully ripen. It is now one of the darlings of the state, especially of Paso Robles. Download the Tasting Notes
  • This is the third crop from a section of Cabernet Sauvignon vines that were replanted, and it is the first real showing of our vineyard’s true potential as these vines will produce and improve upon with age. This Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon matured in New French Oak, which has an extremely tight grain and leaves little space for air exposure, creating a more delicate mouthfeel. According to the winemaker, this is a French Cabernet on steroids. Pair this wine with duck or a leaner beef, with nothing too rich in the sauce. Perfectly seared lamb would also go quite nicely.
